Mosaico&Mosaici 2024 opens

The great annual exhibition of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli opens!

Mosaico&Mosaici, the great annual exhibition of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, opens on Friday 26 July 2024 at 6.30pm. It will be a celebration, as per tradition, the right start to an exhibition that can be visited until August 25th, every day, including August Bank Holiday. A summer event now in its thirtieth edition, which promises beauty, wonder and knowledge in the name of the art of mosaic.

Mosaico&Mosaici 2024 will transform the School into a large exhibition space where the visitor will be able to retrace the history of the recently concluded 2023/2024 training year through works, experiments, drawings, photographs and documents. Through what was done during the lessons of the three courses, which make up the professional training course, the history of the art of mosaic will be retraced, understanding the technical and expressive characteristics of the Greco-Roman, Byzantine, modern and than the contemporary one. These are the four formal and academically recognized moments that the teachers of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli know how to translate into different and original projects and mosaics. Mosaico&Mosaici is therefore an exhibition that is always new, new and unusual every year. This is why it is worth visiting, marking it among the unmissable events of the regional summer.

You will be able to admire a selection of the best works created by the students of the School, individually or in groups, in which different aspects of both the mosaic and the terrace have been explored in depth. We will move from more traditional solutions to innovations, from classic styles to current proposals linked to furniture, design and contemporary taste. You will be amazed at the many variations that an ancient art such as mosaic can have, at the commitment made by teachers and students, at the works developed, at the research conducted, at the contaminations between arts. It is therefore a true and sincere moment of sharing and discussion between those who work within the School and the outside world, the result of study, effort and passion, a manifesto of the vitality of the mosaic, capable of keeping up with the present.

Like a walk through time, we will start from the Greco-Roman mosaic with floor tests inspired by important examples of the past: from the cocciopesto of Teramo (Abruzzo) to the black-white floor of Villa Adriana in Tivoli, from the Aquileian vine leaves with minute tiles to the stems with floral decoration and references to embroidered oriental fabrics.

Brilliant and colorful mosaics, due to the use of Venetian enamels and gold tiles, light up the spaces dedicated to the Byzantine and modern styles, where light is the true protagonist of the works tackled especially by the second course. There is the large panel with the Archangel Gabriel, the interpretation of the glazed ceramic tiles that made up the floor of the Church of San Francesco in Deruta, the icons with sacred subjects and the series of funny animals with big eyes. In the lessons dedicated to the indirect technique, also known as reverse on paper (a technique that was developed by Gian Domenico Facchina -Sequals, 1826 – Paris, 1903-, author of the vast mosaic decoration of the Paris Opera, and of which the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli is heir) the panel with an Art Nouveau motif was developed which became the guiding image for Mosaico&Mosaici 2024: it is the mosaic translation of a design for fabric, in Art Nouveau style, signed by the Friulian artist Angiolo D’Andrea ( 1880-1942) who made his fortune in early twentieth-century Milan.
Among the many mosaics in contemporary style, the research into weaving and arrangement of the tiles stands out, such as the panels that imitate the lace and magnificent embroidery of the Ursulines of Gorizia or the creative challenge, in the field of leather goods, of inserting the mosaic, and not simply apply it to women’s bags which become unique, true works of art. For furnishings, it is worth mentioning the interdisciplinary project of iconic mosaic-covered benches of which the concepts as well as the covering samples are exhibited.

Much more can be seen in the rooms and corridors of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and beyond: in the Gallery, the nearby brick-coloured building, there will be the exhibition Volti Musivi: Icons of art (Mosaic Faces: Icons of art), an exhibition of portraits of well-known people painted in mosaic by students and former students within a project entitled Mosaic Young Talent.

Mosaico&Mosaici 2024 therefore promises to be an exhibition capable of satisfying both the faithful public, admirers attentive to detail, and those who, curious and enthusiastic, will cross the entrance of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli for the first time ready to be overwhelmed by the magic of mosaic.
