This curious clown was made by the first year students who tried their hand at the reverse on paper technique. It is a way of working and composing the mosaic developed by the mosaicist of Sequals Giandomenico Facchina in the second half of the nineteenth century, who through one of his collaborators the School learned and used to carry out great enterprises such as that of the Foro Italico in Rome in the Thirties. This technique is also called “traditional of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli” precisely because it is only here that it is taught and practiced so that future mosaic masters can have an alternative solution to the direct laying of the tiles, useful for responding to particular needs of the client, to solve difficulties operative or, again, to obtain a smooth and continuous surface on which the light flows and reflects.

This character, described with shapes and lines of contemporary taste, is also the demonstration of how the executive modality of the ancient Romans is still current. The arrangement of the tiles in fact follows the trends of the ancient floor mosaics: the figure is surrounded by a sequence of tiles that follows its profile, while the background is filled with the arrangement in horizontal lines. The choice of the subject and the use of modern and bright materials such as enamels bring this work to our time, which can be appreciated by those who seek regular and orderly weaving in the mosaic and the evidence of the traditional tile.
