The centenary of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli
The birthday of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli was celebrated on Saturday 22 January 2022 in a theater packed with the public. Authorities, administrators of the territory, alumni and pupils, entrepreneurs, citizens and many people who in some way have intertwined their life with the School have come from all over the region and not only to the Cinema Teatro Miotto in Spilimbergo where the president of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli Stefano Lovison and the director Gian Piero Brovedani wanted to remember the foundation of an institution that has been training many young people in the profession of mosaicist and terrace-maker for a hundred years.
President Lovison recalled how in 1922, the School was an absolute novelty for Friuli and for Italy. It found its raison d’etre in the artisan tradition of the western Friulian foothills, in the abundance of raw materials, in the difficult social and economic conditions of a territory that has always been marked by emigration, in the desire to train young Friulians destined to work abroad with a technical and cultural competence such as to distinguish them from generic labor. The story starts from here: from the intuition of enlightened men who transformed the excellence of traditional knowledge into a training experience capable of qualifying Mosaic Masters as still happens. A large number of pupils, boys from neighboring villages, came there by bicycle; today instead they come from all over the world to learn such a particular profession, driven by passion and will and make the school an international center, an example of integration and innovation.
The director of the School Gian Piero Brovedani illustrated the rich calendar of events organized to celebrate the school’s hundredth anniversary and which will develop throughout the year where some in-depth studies are planned in Aquileia and Sequals and also a series of appointments that they will involve the whole of Spilimbergo between 20 and 24 April, and again the usual Mosaico&Mosaici exhibition at the end of July and a large exhibition in Lyon in October.
There are also many projects in the pipeline that the School is cultivating in the fields of design, research and training, not least a collaboration with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia. Then there is the project for the Mosaic Citadel which will transform the School into a large pole for the promotion and research on the art of mosaics
The Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli aware of the artistic tradition inherited from the past, looks to the future, renews itself, is a training and promotion center for mosaic art and, as reported by the President of the Region Massimiliano Fedriga, is a living part of the territory, a resource and pride, testimony of our Region and prestige abroad.
The mayor of Spilimbergo Enrico Sarcinelli, Senator Luca Ciriani, MEP Marco Dreosto and regional councilor Stefano Zannier also wanted to bring their greetings, expressing in unison their appreciation for the many activities carried out with the usual wishes greater future successes.
For the occasion, the book dedicated to the hundred years of this glorious institution was also presented.
The Birthday of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, opened in the memory of the past, therefore ended with a look at the future and with the ambitious prospect of seeing many new objectives achieved.
