Gian Domenico Facchina Award: an award from the Municipality of Sequals to two students

The award ceremony of the Gian Domenico Facchina Award took place today, Thursday 11 February 2021, in a reduced form, but with due officiality, the recognition that the Municipality of Sequals awarded to two students of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli who distinguished in the execution of the final essays of the first courses of the academic year 2019/2020.

In the presence of the President of the School, Stefano Lovison, and the Mayor of Sequals, Enrico Odorico, Victor Simoneau and Sebastian Pecile, now in their second year at the School, were awarded. The first, French, presented the mosaic interpretation of a detail of a fresco from the Roman era; the second, from Fagagna, is the representation of a bird, again taken from an ancient work. Both mosaics, delicate and refined in subjects and shades, were made with direct laying and with tesserae in natural materials. The technique is the Roman one, the first that is studied and put in particular in the classrooms of the teachers Giulia Palamin (course I A) and Elena Pauletto (course I B), the teachers who put the hammer in the hands of the students and pass them on the basic principles of mosaic art.

In the opening greeting, President Lovison underlined the importance of the award which has become, year after year, a precious appointment to highlight the merits and skills of the students. With heartfelt words, the Mayor Odorico declared his attention to this initiative promoted by the Municipality of Sequals, the country of origin of many mosaic artists who have distinguished themselves for their works all over the world. The same title of the award refers to Gian Domenico Facchina, an internationally renowned professional, inventor of the indirect method of execution, who became famous for the decoration of the Paris Opera, still capable of creating a lot of amazement in those who enter the foyer of the theater. So many are the Sequals families who have made their fortune and traveled the world with the mosaic. Mayor Odorico himself counts several mosaic artists among his ancestors: in the eighteenth century they went to work in Russia, in the middle of the following century they were in France, Denmark, the Scandinavian peninsula and in the 1940s they reached the United States.

Precisely for this reason the two winning mosaics, by Simoneau and Pecile, will be exhibited for a year in the municipality of Sequals, so that all fellow citizens, and not only, can admire them.
