Organized by the Municipality of Spilimbergo with the collaboration of the Municipality of Udine, the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and the Order of Architects of the province of Udine, the conference intends to investigate the relationship between the mosaic and the culture of design and contemporary design, which opens to this ancient art form new perspectives of growth and development.
Speakers will include architect Paolo Coretti and director of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli Gian Piero Brovedani, moderated by architect Bernardino Pittino.
The opening will be greeted by Pietro Fontanini (mayor of Udine), Enrico Sarcinelli (mayor of Spilimbergo), Stefano Lovison (president of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli).
The mosaic art of Spilimbergo is one of the Italian excellences: born from a deeply local tradition, it has succeeded in projecting the idea of beauty, preciousness, uniqueness in a global dimension, with prestigious realizations all over the world – the Paris Opera , the Ground Zero underground in New York, the Foro Italico, the Sanctuary of Lourdes are just a few examples.
The Spilimbergo Laboratories (there are about 60 of them in operation) continue to work on the unique piece, on the work entirely made by hand, in a process of high craftsmanship that ranges from finding natural stones with the choice of colors, to cutting the materials, up to the composition of the cards.
The aim of the conference is to take stock of a specialized art, mosaic, combined with the taste and trend of contemporary architecture and design. Mosaic was one of the first forms of art and the production system remains in part traditional: instruments and materials are the same as 2000 years ago. What has changed is certainly the stylistic aspect. The technology is used as a support to the design phase. Everything is done by hand, including the cutting of tesserae with the “martellina”, an instrument of which every mosaicist is extremely jealous. Each of them has a specialization: who the faces, who the floral motifs and so on. The products produced can be defined sartorial, because they are born from the encounter and the confrontation with the clients, to then tailor a dress that will dress the horizontal or vertical surfaces. Yet even the mosaic aims at innovation, investing in a constant search for new cutting-edge technologies and materials.
Today the mosaic is used to create works capable of responding to current tastes and needs and to create new decorative proposals that base their roots in tradition and combine the value of design with the charm of Italian craftsmanship.
The conference is supported by the Order of Architects of the Province of Udine, with the recognition of two CFP members who register.
