Mosaico&Mosaici 2023 was inaugurated

A large and enthusiastic public crowded the renovated external courtyard of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli to take part in the inauguration of the Mosaico&Mosaici exhibition: an appointment which traditionally falls on the last Friday of July and which is certainly the most representative event of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and its activity of training, promotion and production of mosaic art.

Now in its twenty-ninth edition, Mosaico&Mosaici is not just an exhibition that offers the opportunity to visit the galleries of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli throughout the month of August, it is a goal, the synthesis of the commitment made during the training year that has just ended. This was highlighted by the president of the Consortium for the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, Stefano Lovison, who welcomed all those present, the civil and military authorities, the representatives of the consortium bodies and of the many cultural and political institutions of the region, recalling how the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli was born more than a century ago with the aim of introducing young people to a trade and how over time it has been able to update and change to respond to the demands of the job market. The director Gian Piero Brovedani reaffirmed the educational purpose, which makes the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli the maximum center of advanced professional training in the art of mosaic, as evidenced by the works on display, results of the dedication and commitment of the students who attend it and to whom the director wanted to give a big round of applause. Due to its peculiarity that has such deep roots in the culture, art and history of the region, the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli has had the support of many organizations throughout its history, first of all the Municipality of Spilimbergo represented by the Mayor of Spilimbergo Enrico Sarcinelli.

Also present to show their closeness to the Mosaic School of Friuli on such an important occasion: the Minister for Relations with Parliament Luca Ciriani, Senator Marco Dreosto, the Vice President and Regional Councilor for Culture and Sport Mario Anzil, the President of the Veneto Regional Council Roberto Ciambetti and the president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Council Mauro Bordin.

With a meeting in the Senate, more than a year ago, the celebrations for the centenary of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli were opened in Rome and in recalling it, Senator Dreosto underlined how the School, in addition to being a training model in the field of craftsmanship artistic, keep the name of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Italian creativity high in the world.

Director Brovedani listed the many collaborations that the School has started in the last year including the one with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, a collaboration praised by President Ciambetti who reaffirmed the link between Veneto and Friuli, which has ancient roots, and of which the mosaic is one of the expressions. President Bordin wanted to confirm what the Regional Administration knows alongside the School since it is a living part of regional culture, a subject involved in what Vice-President Anzil has called a cultural renaissance, capable of giving the world highly qualified workers but also beauty and culture through its specificity, the mosaic. An institution therefore recognized for its educational role, but also for artistic and aesthetic promotion, a place capable, concluded Minister Ciriani, of exporting knowledge and beauty.

On the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony, three awards of merit were awarded to the young mosaic masters Jonas Paul Giubbini (who obtained the qualification certificate in 2023) and Yuyu Ge and Chiara Fornasari (qualified in 2022) for their commitment during attendance in the 2022/2023 training year. These are two scholarships offered by John Pellarin – Alice Masotti Cristofoli and one offered by John Vincent Pellarin – Silvio Laccetti, illustrious representatives of Friulian families of mosaic artists who emigrated abroad where they started thriving businesses.
After the greetings, the exhibition was officially opened by welcoming the many visitors to the workshops where mosaic lessons usually take place, prepared and set up for this month to be showcases of the best projects and mosaics created by the students of the three courses.

The exhibition
The visit begins with the two rooms of the first course and with an in-depth study of the Roman-style mosaic. The decorative motifs reproduced by the students to become familiar with tools and materials are visible, but also larger and more complex works, the result of group work that go beyond the simple copy of ancient floors, but adapt the style of the past to subjects of current taste .

This is followed by the space dedicated to the works of the second course where the Byzantine style, portraiture and the reverse technique on paper are studied. The two haughty and noble figures are of great impact, but also the circular frieze and the series of boxes that contain, like precious caskets, different and colorful mosaic textures.

We continue with the wide range of contemporary mosaic through the works of the students of the third and specialization courses. On the walls individual expressive tests dedicated to the golden proportion and the constituent elements of the mosaic, in the center elaborations of seats, the development of the project for the large sundial, the protagonist with its colors on the outside, the Nativity, an installation of figures where the graphic trait, a composition inspired by Alighiero Boetti. One room is dedicated to the large mosaic surface that will occupy the wall of bathing establishment no. 7 of Lignano Pineta: the last chapter of a multi-year project that has transformed the Kechler seafront into an artistic promenade.

And again, within the exhibition, two thematic exhibitions: in the former SOMSI building, the photographic collection Mosaic images that tell the centenary activity of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and on the first floor of the Pictor imaginarius school building where you can admire paintings and sketches by of mosaics, selected from the Archive. There is no shortage of research and experimentation, mixing with other art forms, design tests and furnishing accessories, classic mosaics in the name of tradition, but also innovative and original proposals that are well suited to today’s social life.
