The inauguration of Mosaico&Mosaici 2025

The Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli opens an exhibition celebrating its 103rd year of activity

Mosaics are not affected by rain, and at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli they know this well, so despite the unfavourable weather conditions, the inauguration of the Mosaico&Mosaici 2025 exhibition was still a success.

This is the most important event in the annual programme of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli because it presents to the public a selection of works created during the training course that has just ended and, as is traditional, it opens on the last Friday in July. Due to the rain, the presentation of the exhibition took place at the Miotto Cinema-Theatre in Spilimbergo.

The large audience that completely filled the theatre then moved to the School to visit the exhibition, which recounts the School’s 103rd year of activity through its mosaics, projects, research and collaborations.
The intimate space of the theatre made the participation of those who wanted to be there to celebrate and support the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli even more lively, but above all to recognise the commitment and give due satisfaction to the students and the group of teachers capable of expressing the vitality of mosaic art at its best: from traditional techniques to the most innovative proposals.

There were many civil, military and religious authorities, many representatives of the seventy institutions that today make up the Consorzio per la Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, many master mosaicists, former students, friends, but also enthusiasts, curious visitors, loyal supporters and those who entered the School for the first time and were enchanted by it.

Stefano Lovison, president of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, opened the inaugural speeches in the theatre by emphasising how the School’s growth is also due to the close and privileged relationship it has with the territory in which it was founded and has grown, and with which it is in constant dialogue. Proof of this can be seen in the numerous collaborations that have brought the art of mosaic into contact with design, fashion, leather goods and architecture through projects with companies, institutions and cultural organisations, in which the students have played a leading role. The director of the School, Gian Piero Brovedani, retraced the origins of the Mosaico&Mosaico exhibition, created precisely to raise awareness of the School’s activities and which, now in its 31st edition, has become a truly international event.

Mayor Enrico Sarcinelli reiterated this, expressing the pride of the Spilimbergo community in the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and recalling that unity and dialogue, which cannot be taken for granted, between many institutions working towards a common goal also made it possible to create the large outdoor floor of the Galleria della Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli entitled Flora and Fauna in Friuli Venezia Giulia: a work that will cover an area of almost 1,265 square metres, part of which can already be admired in the school’s outdoor courtyard.

MEP Alessandro Ciriani highlighted how culture is an essential element that defines the richness of a territory, and therefore credit must be given to the School for having cultivated and developed mosaic art, whose roots certainly lie in the history and craft traditions of western Friuli, but this alone would not suffice to explain the central role played by Friuli Venezia Giulia in this art form.

Also present were Emanuele Loperfido and Senator Marco Dreosto, who congratulated the event and emphasised the desire of parliamentary and government institutions to support institutions that express the values of art, history, quality and culture, recognised worldwide and often summarised in the so-called Made in Italy. This certainly gives the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli credit, but also the responsibility to continue with commitment and dedication its work of training and promoting mosaic art which, as recognised by Mauro Bordin, president of the Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia, attracts students from all over the world with a high level of education and a strong desire to make mosaic art their profession. In her speech, Cristina Amirante, regional councillor for infrastructure and territory, brought greetings from President Massimiliano Fedriga and the entire Council, and once again reiterated the Region’s support for institutions that strongly represent the territory and the region. She also reiterated, referring to the large Flora and Fauna in Friuli Venezia Giulia floor currently under construction, how mosaics should interact with the architecture and urban planning of our cities as a distinctive feature, transforming spaces into meaningful places where the community can identify itself.

At the end of the presentations, the audience moved to the School to visit the Mosaico&Mosaici 2025 exhibition. Each room held surprises, and the displays allowed the works to be shown to their best advantage, accompanied by captions, explanations and many images documenting their creation. A rich exhibition, therefore, which this year will once again offer surprises, but also food for thought. In collaboration with the Circolo culturale SpilimbergoMusica, musical notes from the Ehilà Collective enlivened the evening, making the visit even more enjoyable.

The Mosaico&Mosaici exhibition will remain open every day in August, and we hope it will become an unmissable destination this summer 2025.
