A mosaic for Interreg GO!
The Interreg Annual Event 2025 in Gorizia and Nova Gorica ended in Piazzale della Transalpina with a mosaic.
A mosaic made by the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli has become the symbol of Interreg GO!, the event dedicated to the European Union’s interreg programmes and which this year took place in the first European Capital of Culture Borderless: Nova Gorica and Gorizia.
The mosaic provided the backdrop for the final moment of the Interreg annual event, when in the Piazzale della Transalpina, a place on the regional territory representative of the union between European states, the mayors of Gorizia, Nova Gorica and Šempeter-Vrtojba, Rodolfo Ziberna, Samo Turel, Milan Turk, as well as the director of the Directorate General Regio of the European Community Slawomir Tokarski, brought greetings and their best wishes for the future of cooperation.
The President of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, Stefano Lovison, was present on stage to represent the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli. He did not fail to emphasise to an international audience how the Scuola, with its students coming from different parts of the world (over the last few years, there have been more than twenty nationalities, and not only European), is an example of integration and exchange between people from different cultures who share the desire to learn the art of mosaic, which the workshop training method encourages in its participatory nature, aimed at achieving a common goal rather than emphasising individual differences.
The Interreg GO! event, organised in collaboration with the Interreg Italy-Slovenia programme, the EGTC GO, the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development in Slovenia, as well as with Interact, took place over two days, 27 and 28 March, and was attended by more than 600 representatives from various countries, involved in various capacities in European programming and cooperation activities; on the sidelines, visits and experiences were organised to get to know significant places and results achieved by Interreg Italy-Slovenia projects.
The Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, in addition to being present during the event to offer guests the opportunity to get closer to mosaic, an artistic-craft expression rooted both historically by tradition and in the current market by economic importance, created with Venetian enamels a two-metre stele depicting a graphic composition that sees the Interreg logo with the European flag juxtaposed with the initials promoting Nova Gorica-Gorizia European Capital of Culture 2025, against a background of many colours, a metaphor for the variety and richness expressed by the many communities of Europe and their cultural heritage.
In the final event at the Transalpina square, all those present in a heartfelt flash mob raised a large European flag covering the centre of the square and then lined up to form the inscription ‘EU GO!’: a wish for cooperation and participation without borders, for the beauty of confrontation and sharing, for projects that find their meaning by involving communities that may be different in language, but not in aspirations, just like the individual pieces of the mosaic that only together make up a work.
