In Klagenfurt the coats of arms of Lignano and Capodistria in mosaic
In Klagenfurt, in Kramergasse, the central square of the Austrian town, two new mosaics have been on display for a few days: these are the coats of arms of Lignano Sabbiadoro and Capodistria-Koper (Slovenia).
In fact, in a radial floor composition there are the coats of arms of all the numerous cities twinned with Klagenfurt including Gorizia, Nova Gorica (Slovenia), Wiesbaden (Germany), Tarragona (Spain), Rzeszów (Poland), Dušanbe (Tajikistan), Černivci ( Ukraine), Gladsaxe (Denmark), Laval (Canada)…
The two new coats of arms, made in mosaic with the reverse technique on paper, in natural materials, are the work of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli which also took care of their installation on site, recently carried out by the master mosaicists Luca De Amicis and Marco Mezzanotte .
The coat of arms of Lignano Sabbiadoro is easily recognizable among the others in the square due to the presence of the spiral on a blue and yellow field, symbol of the sea and the beach. The coat of arms of Koper shows a rayed sun on a blue field.
Numerous appreciations were received from the Klagenfurt Administration, in particular from the mayor Christian Scheider and the deputy mayor Alois Dolinar who did not fail to visit the master mosaicists at work.
“Town Twinning” was conceived in Europe around 1950 and was born with the aim of creating not only economic, but above all cultural and social relationships where the hope is that the communities of the twinned cities create lasting relationships of exchange, growth and development. It represents a form of collaboration, sanctioned by an official stipulation, which supports “European integration by promoting intercultural dialogue, the exchange of experiences, knowledge and values, the constructive comparison of opinions and mutual enrichment, thus contributing to the definition of common European identity”.
It is significant that the coats of arms, which document to the citizens and tourists of Klagenfurt the European relations, and not only, of the Carinthian capital, are made in mosaic: this art certainly responds to the requests for conservation and durability necessary for a work exhibited at open, but it is also the expression of a past where national borders were overcome by necessity and the skills of Friulian mosaic artists became the best pass for moving in Europe that recognized their value.
