The external space of the School seen by architecture students

The external space of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli with the road that connects it to the city center was the subject of an international laboratory which involved around thirty architecture students from three universities: that of Udine, that of Valladolid in Spain and that of Beira Interior of Covilhã in Portugal.

Entitled The Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and the architecture of the threshold: new urban spaces for the city of Spilimbergo, the project is part of the “Erasmus Blended intensive programme”, intensive transnational projects financed by the European Commission. The experience for students began in mid-March with remote activities that also saw the participation of Professor Fernando Zaparaín of the University of Valladolid and architect Juan Carlos Arnuncio, professor emeritus of the Escuela Técnica de Arquitectura de Madrid. The group of students and teachers then met in Udine to follow the lessons, carry out the workshops in groups and visit Spilimbergo, Aquileia and Cividale del Friuli.

The initiative is directed by Claudia Pirina, professor of architectural and urban composition, as part of the events organized on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the degree course in Architecture of the University of Friuli. The other teachers participating in the project are Javier Blanco, Pablo Llamazares Blanco, Álvaro Moral García and Jorge Ramos Jular from the University of Valladolid; Miriam Ruiz-Iñigo of the University of Covilhã and Giovanni Comi of the University of Friuli, with the collaboration of the architect Vincenzo D’Abramo.

The Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli opened its doors on Friday 31 March 2023, the day in which the future architects came into contact with the reality of the School, they approached the mosaic and were able to make observations and considerations on spaces and functions which three days of work have reworked into seven projects exhibited on Thursday 6 April to the president of the School, Stefano Lovison, and to the director Gian Piero Brovedani, to the coordinator of the study course Alberto Sdegno and to Renato Bocchi, professor at the Iuav University of Venice in a special presentation in Udine, at the University headquarters on the Rizzi campus.

The solutions proposed to improve the use of the external area and the enhancement of the School are diversified and fascinating: galleries, wings, mobile elements and street furniture, functional and sometimes visionary choices that offer different interpretations on what role the School can play in the urban context of Spilimbergo and also of the region.

«This workshop – explains Professor Pirina – aims to develop critical reflections on the architectural and landscape enhancement of the Friulian heritage, the sustainability and resilience of small towns. The city of Spilimbergo constitutes an opportunity to identify in the transformation processes of the urban space the key to the integration between the historical fabric and the spaces of the historical educational institution of international prestige of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli».

Satisfaction also expressed by the President Lovison and the Director Brovedani who, after offering maximum collaboration to the university project, appreciated the students’ papers by sharing considerations and reflections in an open discussion that led to interesting conclusions.
