The generosity of a family of mosaic artists

Premio Pellarin 2023 B

The generosity of a family of mosaic artists

On the occasion of the inauguration of Mosaico&Mosaici, the annual exhibition of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, three important awards were attributed to the Pellarin family, originally from Sequals and known for its centuries-old activity in the field of mosaic and terrazzo.

Thanks to the sensitivity and mediation of Angelo Masotti Cristofoli, related by kinship to the Pellarin family, three scholarships worth one thousand euros each were awarded to deserving students who stood out for their commitment, responsibility and dedication in the training year that has just ended 2022/2023. In particular, two scholarships dedicated to John Pellarin and Alice Masotti Cristofoli were assigned to Yuyu Ge and Chiara Fornasari, students of the specialization course; while Jonas Paul Giubbini, who recently concluded his training course, was awarded the scholarship dedicated to John Vincent Pellarin and Silvio Laccetti.

This generous act arranged by the Pellarin family and its heirs is an expression of the care and attention that Friulian entrepreneurs who emigrated abroad have always shown towards their territory of origin and the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli. From Sequals and western Friuli in general capable men left for distant destinations to work and thus improve their own conditions and those of their families. They also reached the United States where several of them made their fortunes in the field of terrazzo and mosaic. At the end of the 1920s, the “National Terrazzo and Mosaic Contractors’ Association” was formed in Chicago, an association that brought together owners of terrazzo and mosaic companies, more than half of which were Italian, or rather Friulian. It will be this association that will give a big contribution at the beginning of the Thirties to the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, for its sustenance and development in that fundamental activity which was the technical training of young people who would shortly thereafter swell the migratory flows, with a specific and highly qualified professional profile.

The awards offered by John Pellarin and Alice Masotti Cristofoli and by John Vincent Pellarin and Silvio Laccetti once again confirm the need in the labor market, yesterday as today, for strong and up-to-date training, aimed at transferring specific skills, but which , in addition to technical notions, knows how to enhance human skills and bring out that work ethic which was the basis of the history of many self-taught entrepreneurs who brought prestige to Italy internationally. In this, mosaic and terrazzo workers are standard-bearers and a visit to the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli can clarify this: until 27 August 2023, the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli is open with its Mosaico&Mosaici exhibition every day from 10.00 to 12.30 and from 16.30 to 20.00.
