The Mosaic at Barcolana 57
At the 57th Barcolana, the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli once again confirms its status as a training centre for the art of mosaic at all levels. It does so with the involvement of Veolia, a group that supports cities, institutions and businesses in their ecological transformation and which is participating in the historic sailing event in Trieste with a project dedicated to mosaics.
On Friday 10 October 2025, at 9.30 a.m. in Piazza Verdi, Trieste, a public meeting was organised between the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, the city’s schools and the general public, curated by the school’s president, Stefano Lovison, and director Gian Piero Brovedani. It will be an opportunity to talk about the art of mosaics, to understand its deep roots in the region and to explore its characteristics and qualities. Mosaics are, by their very nature, the sum of many units that together make up the work: the tiles. These are important, different, but essential, none can be missing, and they symbolically represent the contribution that each of us can make to reduce the negative human impact on the environment by adopting virtuous behaviour. A common goal that consists of multiple actions, even small and everyday ones, in a context where art can become a means to activate change, to launch proposals, to improve the quality of life.
Alongside the speeches, a large mosaic measuring approximately 3.6 by 1.4 metres will be unveiled, entitled Building the Future: Sustainability, Piece by Piece, the result of a collaborative effort involving several primary schools in Trieste. It is a collective creation on the theme of environmental sustainability. The tiles are the result of the transformation of everyday materials into artistic elements: paper, plastic caps, fabrics, buttons, corrugated cardboard, pieces of wood and cork, dried fruit shells, uncooked pasta, shells and pebbles… A mosaic made of creativity, spontaneity and beauty, typical of its young creators, the primary school pupils, which draws its strength from the casual and original use of scraps and waste, revisited and chosen for their aesthetic qualities.
The event will be a moment of great collective joy in the name of mosaics, with the participation of all the pupils involved, Veolia, the project curator, the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and the Trieste-based companies Carmet s.r.l., Govoni Impianti s.r.l., Install.pro s.r.l. and Rosso s.r.l., which believed in and supported the project.
The synergy between the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and Veolia is based on a shared vision of art as a means of communication and a driver of social and cultural development. For this reason, the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli will hold introductory mosaic courses at its headquarters in Spilimbergo for teachers who have been mediators and promoters of this special mosaic project in their schools. Participation will be free for teachers, thanks to the support offered by Veolia, with a view to ensuring that the project, created for Barcolana, can be replicated, sustained and enhanced by the specific and technical training provided by the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli.
