Tribute Award to Nane Zavagno
The award dedicated to the memory of artist Nane Zavagno is aimed at third-year students and was presented on Tuesday, 18 November 2025, in the Aula Magna of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli. This is a “tribute competition” strongly desired by his son Antonio Zavagno, who was present in the hall with the director of the School, Gian Piero Brovedani, to remember the figure of Nane Zavagno and outline the characteristics of the competition.
This competition encourages students to reflect on the expressive and formal research of the recently deceased artist, who was a student and teacher at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli. During his career, Nane Zavagno was also a painter and sculptor, without ever abandoning mosaics, where his attention to the material was evident: those river pebbles that he recovered and exalted as primordial and fundamental elements of Friulian mosaic art.
The students are asked to create a work that is not a copy of Zavagno’s mosaic production, but rather evokes its “spirit”. Antonio Zavagno said: «I found many boxes of mosaic material that my father was unable to use. So I had the idea of encouraging the students at the School to interpret Nane’s artistic research: it’s a nice way to remember him».
To fully immerse themselves in the artist’s world, students will also have the opportunity to use materials cut and prepared by Zavagno that remained in his studio after his death on 11 January.
This is a creative challenge that students are gradually approaching by studying the artist’s biography and works.
