Conference
Tessere di storia. The history mosaic tiles.
Study on the birth, history and uses of glass mosaic.
Friday 15 September 2023, 5.30 pm.
Venice, Ateneo Veneto, Sala Lettura – Reading Room.
As part of the international event Venice Glass Week (Venice, 9-17 September 2023) the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli was invited to bring its contribution to an important conference curated by OAPPC – Order of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservators of the province of Venice, by FAPPC – Foundation of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservators of the Metropolitan City of Venice and by the Cultural Production and Relations with Universities Service of the Municipality of Venice.
This is an in-depth meeting on the theme of mosaic art, investigated in its historical evolution from its origins to the present where the presence of mosaics in architecture and in urban and interior furnishings is increasingly frequent and successful. The conference is open to everyone, but is aimed in particular at architects and designers to stimulate interest in this noble art by increasing awareness and offering suggestions and creative ideas.
The conference sees the collaboration of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, with which the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli signed a Memorandum of Understanding in February 2022, the year of its centenary, which aims to develop and promote research, training and dissemination in the field of mosaic and glass art, of the Fornace Orsoni, which links its history to a famous Friulian mosaicist Gian Domenico Facchina whose execution technique of the reverse on paper is faithfully preserved and practiced by the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, and of the cultural institute Ateneo Veneto of Sciences, Letters and Arts where the event will take place.
A voice, that of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, which therefore could not be missing given the historical and current links with the city of Venice, and the continuous and globally relevant activity in the training and formal and expressive research of mosaic art. In fact, the president of the School, Stefano Lovison, and the director Gian Piero Brovedani will close the proceedings with two reports focused on the role of the School in the international panorama and on the developments in mosaic art promoted by the School, without betraying the artisanal knowledge inherited from the mosaicists and terrazzo workers from western Friuli, but updating it based on the requests and tastes of today. The title of the speech by director Brovedani is therefore significant, summarizing the activity of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli as “an evolving tradition”.
