The Mosaico&Mosaici 2022 exhibition is underway, the annual event that presents the best results of the training year just ended. Now in its twenty-eighth edition, it is charged with an additional value: it is in fact the exhibition of the school’s hundredth year of activity.
Accompanied by a rich illustrated catalog, the exhibition is set up in the School’s laboratories, which become exhibition spaces and art showcases. The mosaics made by the students will be presented, along with photos and sketches; different works every year, because if the didactic objectives remain fixed, so that the student can acquire the necessary skills, the ways to achieve them are many and the creativity and experience of the teachers of the School allow to develop different projects, in form and subject , offering summer visitors always unpublished mosaics.
The works of the Mosaico&Mosaiciexhibition express tradition and innovation, respect and creativity, care and quality. Entering the spaces of the first course you will therefore see the works in ancient, Hellenistic and Roman style. These mosaics represent the highest exercises of those who for the first time approached cutting and hammering: from the development of decorative motifs, such as the Solomon’s knot individually solved with the combination of square tiles of natural material, to the copy of some details, animal and vegetable, of classic mosaics. There are also tests of subjects with a contemporary design, but translated into Roman style and large group works, such as a tapestry signed by William Morris interpreted in mosaic.
A change in materials and methods of execution is clearly visible by looking at the works of the second course, where the Byzantine mosaic and the modern one characterized by the reverse technique on paper are studied. Of the many works with the bright colors of Venetian enamels, attention will certainly be paid to portraits and three-dimensional volumes. Then there is the series of animals, with the tiles that take on various forms to describe physical qualities, the signs with 1930s figures, the original mosaics on fabric that will become tapestries to be dropped from the windows of the new exhibition building.
In the third course each student, given the wealth of knowledge acquired, engages in original works for conception and composition. Each of the sixteen students, who obtained the professional qualification of Mosaic Master last June, illustrates, as if it were a collective exhibition, the fruits of his research. On the walls the large “pop” panel created during the internship with the guest artist Luca Barberini, the series of mosaics inspired by the impressionist canvases by Claude Monet, with the water lilies of the Giverny garden rendered through a game of reliefs and different textures, and that of the urban views taken from the paintings of the American Jeremy Mann.
The visit then continues along the corridors of the School that tell the evolution of mosaic art over the centuries, but also the many collaborations with artists and the expressive potential of the mosaic that meet the taste of contemporaneity with contaminations in architecture and especially in the world of design summarized in the dedicated room on the first floor.
